# Windows License Activation Guide
Understanding Windows License
A Windows license is a legal agreement between you and Microsoft that grants you the right to use their operating system software. There are different types of licenses available, including retail, OEM, and volume licenses, each with its own terms and conditions.
Types of Windows Licenses
Retail License
This is the most flexible type of license that can be transferred to another computer. It’s typically more expensive but offers more freedom to users who frequently upgrade their hardware.
OEM License
Original Equipment Manufacturer licenses come pre-installed on new computers and are tied to the specific hardware they were originally installed on. These licenses are generally less expensive but cannot be transferred to another machine.
Volume License
Designed for businesses and organizations, volume licensing allows multiple installations across many computers under a single agreement.
